Section 2: The Tower of Babel

This section examines the reasons for the existence of many diverse programming languages and looks at the specific strengths, weaknesses and general features of each of the most commonly used and studied languages.

Section Objectives

After completing this section, you will be able to

  1. List the most commonly used programming languages.
  2. Describe the defining characteristics and capabilities of each of these languages.
  3. Describe the procedural programming paradigm and contrast it to alternatives.
