Section 2: Computer Networks, the Internet, and the World Wide Web

This section discusses computer networks with a specific focus on the types of communication links used, the types and architecture of networks, data transmissions, and layers. The Internet and World Wide Web are described and placed in context.

Section Objectives

After completing this section, students will be able to

  • List and describe the basic concepts of computer networking.
  • List the various types of communications links used in networking, and describe their characteristics and capabilities.
  • Describe and define Local and Wide Area Networks.
  • Describe the overall structure of the Internet.
  • List and describe the various communications protocols used in networking.
  • List and describe the 5 basic layers of communication protocols.

  • Chapter 7 in the textbook.
